UX strategies: Gamification

Context

As an intern in Novatr’s Product Design Tech Team, I started by defining the UX strategy for product along with Product Manager.

This meant getting components aligned first: a Vision of the experience Novatr's dashboard should deliver for learners, Goals tied directly to measurable product outcomes (DAU/WAU and course completion rate). A Plan executed through a Lean UX approach through persona definition to an MVP feature set.

BRAND STORY

Novatr is a global EdTech company building cohort-based, industry-led upskilling programs for the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) sector. It offers online certification courses in emerging AEC domains from Building Information Modelling (BIM), computational design, to sustainable design; bridging the gap between traditional education and current industry demand.

The platform is built around structured cohort-based learning that combines flexibility with real-world relevance, helping AEC professionals transition into high-demand roles.

Discover

Started with a Lean UX process to structure the discovery work before converging on problem statement.

7-phases designed to move fast, learn fast, ship fast, and fail fast.

Research → Convergence → Persona → Business goals → Redesign Workflow → UI → Testing.

Phase 1 (about framing): What we were actually trying to change?

Learner drop-off

Daily Active Usage

Course completion

Phase 2 (opened with primary research): observe behaviour, not just collect opinions.

Learners couldn't distinguish urgent tasks from low-priority content on the dashboard.

Learners were unsure where to look first when they land on the dashboard.

Learners struggle to connect dashboard progress with actual course completion

Learners default to external tools (Google Calendar) instead.

Mapping User Problems

PLAN, ACT, PERSIST = ROOT PATTERNS IN LEARNER'S BEHAVIOUR

PLAN: WEAK TIME AWARENESS

Learners couldn't effectively plan or act in the short term because timelines, deadlines, and “what’s next” were not clearly communicated

ACT: COGNITIVE OVERLOAD & LACK OF CLARITY

Learners struggled to quickly identify what deserves their attention because the dashboard lacked hierarchy and structured focus

PERSIST: LACK OF FEEDBACK & MOMENTUM SIGNALS

Lack of clear progress feedback and actionable guidance reduced momentum and sustained engagement within the LMS.

Challenge

  1. Most learners are working professionals with limited time. Designing for consistent engagement across a 7–9 month program without it feeling repetitive or overwhelming

  1. The dashboard had to work for many learner states, learner in their first week, someone falling behind and a high performer. All have different needs but same platform.

  1. Personalisation without losing predictability. The more the UI adapts learner's state, the more is the risk to break their mental model, and result into unwanted cognitive load.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Novatr learners don't know what to do when they log into LMS. Without a clear sense of what's urgent, what comes first, or whether they're on track , they start to disengage. This turns into reactive engagement, and working against the task completion rates.

FEATURES

Design Decisions (Conceptual for MVP)

HOME DASHBOARD (aka NOVATR STUDIO)

Path oriented homepage: structured view that shows the learner's position in the program at a glance: what's done, what's active, and what's next.

Skill Map

A visual grid mapping skills across domains and depth levels, so learners can see where they're growing and where gaps exist

AI Learning Path

An AI assistant acting as a coach rather than a search tool, asks about goals and completion, and adjusts the learning path accordingly. Not hindering the default cohort-level UI.

Nova

Nova is our friendly in-platform guide—created to make learning feel less overwhelming and more human.

The goal of Nova is simple:

Nova walks with learners throughout their journey, nudging progress, celebrating milestones, and helping them bounce back whenever motivation drops.

3 pillars underneath:

Guidance

Motivation

Celebration

Gamification Hub

  1. The Streak Card is designed as a core behavioural mechanic to drive daily engagement, reinforce consistency, and cultivate a sense of progress.

  • Habit loop reinforcement

  • Variable rewards & Progress Visibility

  • Uplifts DAU

  1. Leaderboard: As the most engaged component on the current dashboard, it serves a real motivational function, giving learners a sense of where they stand relative to their cohort and validating their effort through visibility and rank.

  1. Detailed Analytics: Learners currently have no way to understand their own performance beyond a surface-level leaderboard rank.

A dedicated analytics view gives them visibility into their progress against personal goals, task completion patterns, and standing within the cohort.

This directly addresses the PERSIST root cause
